DIY Studding of tires

I have some Kleber snows which are really not very good snow, certainly not ice tires. They have probably 5000 miles on them. I
It would improve them if i could stud them, but when I called about this, I was told you can't do any but new tires. The reason given was that dirt in the stud holes would hinder stud insertion.
Makes sense, and i see why they wouldn't want to be bothered, but i figure I could clean out the stud holes with compressed air and maybe a pick.
But can I put in my own studs?
I have compressed air, is there a tool which does this?
And is there a source for studs?
