240 Suspension Questions - misaligned, loose wheel, clunking over bumps - what is it? 200 1986

Howdy,
Just picked up a city car.. 86 245DL auto w/ 235k miles on it. Had an 81 before and a 91 745GLE, so somewhat know what is going on here..

The problem is the steering wheel feels loose, I get some clunking on railroad tracks/bumpy roads, and the car doesnt track straight. Feels like a loose joint or bushing. What is the best way to figure this out before ordering parts and taking it to a shop?

I am leaning towards control arm bushings or the ball joint being shot. Is the IPD poly bushing upgrade worth the addt'l cost?

Also, shocks are pretty weak now.. I'm used to my lowered Audi and my stiffened up Porsche 944 (firm ride); so what is a good combination to go with that is still reasonably priced? Boge Turbo Gas & IPD springs? Or just the Boge shocks enough?

And finally... What should labor be on all this?

I'm limited from repairing myself because my parking garage folks frown upon that and I'm without tools now..

Thanks!

Mike
