How do the rear wheel bearings work? Do you repack them? 200

How do you check them to see if they're okay? Is there any DIY'r maintenance on the rear wheel bearings? I've never taken apart the back axle/wheel bearings...so I'm sort of fishin to see how the darn thing is put together too. On my Dad's '86, we've never done anything to the back wheel bearings...but on the front, we've repacked. My daughter's '89 ..same story. Was wondering about how they're normally lubricated. Does the rear end gear oil lubricate the wheel bearings somehow?
