Replacing bad AC Compressor 200

I'm about to order a used AC compressor off of Ebay to finally fix the dead one on my '88 245 so I can once again enjoy the comfort of power steering, the other day I had to have my friend in the passenger seat assist me in turning the steering wheel after being tightly wedged between two other cars at the park.
I know I'm sopposed to have the system discharged at a a/c shop but beyond that I am at the mercy of my haynes manual.
I'm curious if any other DIY'ers out there have tackled this one? Any advice or warnings would be greatly appreciated!
