'86 240 died a couple of times in traffic...starts right up....never done this before 200 1986

My father said that he was in traffic at a red light and the car stalled. He had to put it in park and crank it back up. This happened twice. He is in New Orleans and I'm 7 hours away..so I'm gonna try and diagnose this thing a little before I drive down and have a look at it. I asked him what kind of gas he's running: he said 92 or 93 octane...but couldn't tell me what gas station..says he doesn't remember. Anyhow...I'm suspecting the Idle Air Valve....does this sound right?
