If you've been using the air conditioner, then condensation from the evaporator drain pan may be overflowing onto the carpet. The culprit could be the drain pan drain tube is plugged/filled with debris. Common problem ..same thing happened to my old '86. I fixed it by taking out drain tube and then cutting one of the slits back just a little. Just a suggestion.
