Engine identification 900

Could anyone explain how to identify an engine type, from the bare engine block and head?
I do know about VIN and how to find out what is in the vehicle, but if you have come across an engine and you don't know what vehicle it was in, how can one identify it, besides that you can see its a 4 cyl, fuel injected non turbo.
Is there any numbers somewhere on the block and head?

Thanks
