After I cleaned and replaced the PNP switch, the lights did not flash. However, the transmission continues to slip after momentarily working right after start up. Worse, there is an internal noise, as if it were without ATF and ATF smells burnt although it looks clean and clear, which make an experienced mechanic friend who came around think the tranmission clutches are toast. All I can think is that electrical glitches first made the transmission slip, and then I did mechanical damage limping home for 10-15 minutes. When I arrived home, I read codes 114 (open program selector switch or short to ground), 114 (missing RPM signal from AT), 235 (overheating ATF), and 122 (solenoid S1 open circuit).
A new Volvo PNP switch from Groton should arrive this week. Do you still think I should put in the new PNP, flush AT with new ATF and hope for the best? Or should I be looking for a new or remanufactured AT?. The mechanic friend who came around has rebuilt many Volvo AW70 and AW71 transmissions, but no AW30-40 which he says he dares not touch.
The one and only Volvo dealer for Puerto Rico wants nearly $6,000 for a remanufactured transmission from Volvo, plus labor, materials, etc. for installation. Around 3 years and 20,000 miles ago, they put in the transmission that is now in the car, and charged the previous owner $6,000.
