Head Rest Differences before and after 1986? 200 1984

I have an '84 242ti, but the leather seats have been replaced with those from an '88. The headrests are covered and the PO cut them down. I would like to replace them with the standard open design, and will go with headrests from an '86 or newer, since the seats are from an '88.

I'm curious what is the difference between 75-85, and '86 - on headrests. Compatible?
