Faulty oxygen sensor 200 1989

Hello all,
I currently drive a 1989 240 dl which has an erractic idle and a slight hesitation on acceleration. My mechanic changed the fuel pressure regulator and inspected numerous other parts (plugs, distributor). He has determined it most likely is the oxygen sensor and wants to replace it. The car itself runs fine when warmed up and gets fine mileage. My question to you is what are the general symptoms of a faulty sensor.

All the best and Merry Xmas.
