Need help removing m46 to fix noise, removing clutch cable to fork?? 200 1984

Hi all,

I am trying to pull the m46 on my new winter beater, a 1984.5 245Ti. There is a noise in all gears, and at idle when the clutch is out (engaged with engine) but tapers off when the clutch is pressed in (disengaged with engine). It sounds like a raspy moan or something. I have dwindled it down to either an input shaft, throwout, or release bearing. Hopefully I 'll be able to tell when the tranny is out.

Anyways, I have everything just about disconnected besides where the clutch cable meets the clutch fork. The cable itself has a little ball on the end and then there is a metal piece with a slit for the cable to be slid out of, which I broke, and now there is still a rubber piece that is molded around the cable. This rubber piece and metal part are held against the clutch fork by the force of the cable, on the side of the fork opposite the direction the cable goes to the clutch pedal. The PO said that the clutch had been replaced. Also, the adjusting screw on the cable seems like plastic and will not turn.

The question is, I see that I can cut the rubber chunk off and then remove the tranny, but how is it supposed to be reassembled??

Also, what are your thoughts about the tranny noise?? What bearing.

Thanks guys, I don't like to spend any more time than I have to while laying on the garage floor in our unheated garage in the middle of december in wisconsin!
