Considering buying an 89 244 M47 - need advice

I think that is a California emission car (50 states) with the Bosch 556 variant. It should have an obvious EGR just behind the battery. Much rarer than the 561 non-EGR cars, but still the ECUs occassionally sell, meaning they occassionally fail. You can also run it with a 561, 591, 928 and more, if EGR function is not important. Just buy a spare for $25-100 and an AMM too and drive with peace of mind. No big deal.
