AT overdrive only engages after warming up for ~.5 hour 200 1988

I've read several posts about this conundrum. My '88 240 GL AT only goes into 4th gear after about half an hour in cold weather or fifteen minutes in warmer weather.

I replaced the overdrive relay switch to no avail.

I think--from what I've read--that replacing the solenoid will correct the problem, but I don't know how to do it (e.g., I don't know where the solenoid is).

Finally, I know that driving at about 65mph at 3500 rpms can't be all that good for the engine, but am I seriously damaging the car? I am going to fix it asap, but wanted to try myself...

TIA,
JM
