What is roaring noise you can hear in front & back seat ? 700 1987

We finally got my 87 740 running nicely...thanks to everyone's help. Now the next problem. There is a roaring noise usually very loud above 62 mph. When in the back seat you can't hear people talking in the front seat. Roar gives you a headache. We had a new muffler and tail pipe put on a couple years ago. Also had catalytic converter taken off. I know most places can't get by with that but we knew the guy that did it. Should we have gone back with a special muffler for the volvo. My husband says no. I have driven this car since it was new(130,000 miles now) and the noise has gotten very loud. So what do you guys think? I'm very picky on my Volvo and want it to last forever. Thanks for your help. Dee
