Definitely sounds like bad tailgate wiring harnesses - as mentioned, you can see them through the hinges. I believe the 88s have a third brakelight back there which could be causing the problem with it not shutting off until foot is off the pedal.

My 85 245, which does not have the brakelight, does have a similar issue where it will occasionally keep running until I turn the headlights off. I also am noticing the defrost light come on at random times. I know for a fact the tailgate harnesses are on their last legs (license plate lights work but that's about it; can see broken wires through the hinges) - and I believe that to be the source of the problem as when the wires break, they short together and cause strange happenings.
