Front bumper shocks 200 1988

I caught a photo on the brickboard gallery where someone drilled a hole in each shock assembly and pushed his (commando) bumper IN. Loss of energy absorbtion in a crash situation, but it sure looked good. Considering doing that or getting a shorter assembly of some sort affixed to my cars, seeing as how they both have that bumper sticking out a country mile. I don't know how this would affect the non-commando bumper. Ideas?
