Weird bogging-esque sounds 200 1988

So I was driving my car today and I had two people in with me. I don't have a tach, so I cant give an exact reading, but I was in 3rd gear (manual tranny) going about 40 uphill, and it made a really scary stuttering sound. I have no idea what it was, but if I had to guess id say something scary. I called my father and talked to him about it and he said it could possibly be a u-joint in the driving linkage? any help is greatly appriciated.
