1989 Volvo 740Turbo problem 700

Hey.
I have a Volvo 740 Turbo Intercooled that just died on me. I just got home, and I have not talked to anyone else yet so I have no clue what happend. I was just driving along at about 35 mph when I shifted the car from Drive into Neutral. I reved it alittle, but then shifted back into drive. But the turbo spooled up, then let out a really high pitched whine, and it really decelerated. So I imediatly droped my foot off the Accelerator and the whine went away. So I started to accelerate again, and everything is fine...until the turbo comes on. Then the whine is back and the car is unable to get past about 25 mph. So I got home and just glanced under the hood, and the main hoses seem to be connected, but it is dark so I may have missed something. Please help me!!!
Thanks,
Billy
