coolant temp sensor woes 200

I have an 89 240 wagon. I changed out the coolant temp sensor and the service engine light came on and wont go off. What is the reason for this? I thought it might be the inferior autozone sensor I put in so I took it out and put the bosch back in and ck engine light is still on. I checked OBD and it gave a 1-2-3 which is the sensor. I'm stumped--have I missed something. I also changed intake manifold gasket. I'm wondering if there is something I didnt get connected when I put it back together. The connector to the cool temp sensor looked fine. I put a little dialectic grease to insure contact. Please help. This was a ton of work-- I hate when I get stuck after all that. Phil
