Reverse Lights - Now what? 200

I ordered a new reverse light switch, installed it, and it still doesn't work. That, I have to say, was a jigantic pain in the arse! This is the only thing I need to pass inspection. So I am dying to become street legal.

I have a 1984 Vovlo 240 GL Sedan. It is a 4 cyl and I also found that I was running on 3 cylinders! The engine does run a little smoother and just a tiny bit more power.

When I short the wires that connect to the switch, the lights DO come on. If I connect the wires to either switch and just push down on the button on the switch, they DO NOT come on. I figured it must be a grounded switch, so I installed the new switch and hooked up everything and put the tranny crossmember back on and no luck.

My local mechanic told me that something is loose inside the tranny and it has to come off. IS THERE ANYWAY TO AVOID THIS? I don't have a cement driveway. I have to lay in the dirt or on cardboard to get under there. HELP!
