trans cooler line leak 700 1990

My 1990 745GL is leaking ATF from one of the cooler lines. Right about where the block mates to the bell housing I have a bracket that hangs the exh and there is a small clamp that holds the two lines still. The lower of the lines is leaking right where the bracket holds them. I went to FAQ's and someone had a similar problem they solved with a compression fitting. That would interfere with the bracket/clamp my car has unless I eliminated the bracket or modified it.
Is that bracket entirely necessary and is a compression fitting safe enough?
Thanks in advance
