check engine light came on- what to do? 1990 240 200 1990

Hi!
I am a newish owner of a 1990 240 sedan. The check engine light came on, but as far as I can tell, nothing seems wrong. I suppose first I need to find out where to find out the error codes, so if anyone could tell me that, I'd be eternally grateful. From what I've read so far, it seems these things are often caused by faulty oxygen sensors, etc. If anyone could give me some idea of where to start, I'd really appreciate it!
