No heat on 93 940 wagon and more 900

It is 1 degree F with windchill today in New Jersey. Wife complains it is freezing cold driving the Volvo. But I don't know how long the car has been like this. Wife and our 19 year old daughter have been using the car only occasionally. Are they all like this or only those in my family. Do they not check the gages while driving? So long as no steam is coming out from the hood just go the merry way. Does that sound familiar to you? I climbed in the 940 to check it out, the temperature gage is at the red line. So I shut the engine off to fill fresh coolant, a good half gallon it gulped. That took care of the no heat part, or did it?

Now the temperature gage consistently stays at the very cold part. There is only luke warm air coming out of the vent when I set the dial to 5.

What's wrong? Is the thermostat stuck open?
