A/C Compressor Issues - need advice. 700 1990

A/C compressor on a 1990 740 B230 is making a grinding noise. When car is first idling the grinding/wirring sound is moderately faint but after an hour or so of driving the sound becomes much louder.

Ran an experiment today by taking out the Air Con fuse to shut it out of the mix. The issue continued which leads me to believe that perhaps the pulley bearings are either cracked or the grease has dried up.

So... has anyone else faced the same scenario?

What did you do, what can i do to rectify the problem...? Do I need to replace the entire compressor and have to deal with the entire A/C system or can I replace the pulley bearings without removing the unit.

?????????
