Water pump change in progress 1990 V6 760

Hello David:

It sounds like you have your hands full with this one!

1) Don't drive that car until you replace the radiator-- the cracked inlet neck has been the source of many catastrophic failures-- if you think the water pump is a nuisance, try doing head gaskets on that car!

2) Replace all the drive belts while you are at it-- if the power steering belt goes when you are done all this you will have to fight half this battle again!

3) For the hoses behind the pump, I'd buy them from Volvo, along with new clamps-- I had lousy luck with aftermarket hoses on the B280F. You'll save yourself a huge fight and the parts will be good for the next 10 years! Ditto for that 7mm allen head bolt on the back of the pump (not a standard size-- it will be unobtainium at virtually all hardware stores. I get some fasteners like that at the junkyard. Use antiseize compound on re-assembly and it won't happen again! Replace the 10mm nuts that hold the fan on-- put them on with a good open end wrench, not a vice grips! Did your new water pump come with the studs for mounting the fan installed, or are you expected to move them over? If so, you will need to double nut them to get them out.

4) Burping the air out of the B280F takes some patience-- add coolant until it stops taking it easily, then start the car with the heat and fan turned on and run it, adding coolant as necessary when the level goes down in the recovery tank.

Good luck!
