Why did my caliper piston get stuck? 200 1980

After hearing a scraping noise from the right rear of my 1980 245DL, took off the wheel to find the inboard brake pad completely worn down to the backing plate. The caliper piston was stuck - apparently was never retracting and eventually wore out the pad. This caliper (and the left rear one) was a rebuilt purchased from a local Volvo independent shop in June 2002 - I installed it myself (at the same time did the left caliper, pads, and metal brake lines, then bled brakes going through a LOT of fluid). The rear calipers have 21k miles on them (the fronts are the originals but have been rebuilt). Obviously I expected MUCH longer life from the caliper. Unless I damaged it during installation (unlikely but possible I suppose), is there any reason the caliper would fail other than an improper rebuild? Comments appreciated....Thanks

Zack
