what is normal or acceptable when shifting from P to R or to D 200 1989

should it be super smooth that you don't even feel anything. I notice some cars when you shift from PARK to R or to D or from R to D, or any of the combinations, you will feel the car kind of "jerk"--well not a harsh jerk, but more of a bump forward or backward. is this normal or acceptable? I heard that in severe cases where the car lurches forward when shifting from P, it's a sign of bad motor mounts. but is a little jerk ok and considered normal?
