'84 245 overdrive MT 200

When i first bought the wagon the previous owner said that it no longer switched into overdrive at 45mph like its was supposed to but at 60mph instead. no problem, right? Now the car is very reluctant to go into overdrive, i replaced the wiring and changed the fluid to no avail. I was able to get into overdrive last time i drove it after about 60+ miles then it was fine til i needed to go into overdrive again. Any suggestions? does the valve in the solinoid get gunked up, the old fluid was pretty nasty? What would cause the system to fail very slowly, if it was really bad i figure the unit would stop working all together instead of over a period of time (2 years, 60,000 miles or so). It is a1984 245 with the b23 engine and the m46 4sp+OD tranny. thanks for any help
