Fuel problem or not? 200

1980 Volvo 240

Running fine
Then violent surging when getting on the gas, fine when easy on the throttle
I thought a u-joint was out or the rear end. But no
Then harder to get it to run, won't rev, even when in nuetral, but will still start and idle
Then barely starts
Now it won't even start anymore.

I am a first time volvo owner. There is a lot of complexity to these thing unlike the volkswagens I am used to working on.

Spark seems fine.
I suspect Fuel pump problem.
Fuses fine.

JUst wondering if these same events have happened and I can go straight to the source of the problem, before checking everything in this complex system.
