240 Instrument light replacement 200 1992

I am having problems with instrument lights in my '92 240 DL. There appear to be several instrument lights which illunminate the instrument panel. About 6 months ago the light which illuninated the gas guage went out (annoying but not fatal), and then the other night the rest of the instrument panel lights seemed to quit(unlivable). I have been told that it is very difficult to replace the lights (the entire dash needs to be pulled?) and a local mechanic said they would be willing to do it for roughly $200. This seems a little excessive and I thought maybe I could do it (I am mechanically inclined). Has anyone out there replaced these lights? Thanks in advance for any advice
