Windscreen washer won't stop 945/1996 900

Dear members
Had a funny one-- driving along and gave a squirt to wash the windscreen. Usually it squirts for about 5 seconds after leafing off the handle and then stops by itself, but this time around it just did not stop. So-- stopped the engine: the waterworks stopped, -- started the engine: the waterworks started by themselves again and kept on going till the reservoir was empty, then stopped the engine: pump stopped -- started the engine again: pump came on again. then left the engine off for a few minutes to get water for the reservoir to avoid pump dammage, turned on the engine and the waterworks stopped. I tried a few times afterwards, but it worked perfect, so ??
My question is: Is there an extra relay which keeps the little pump squirting even when the switch is not pulled and if so, could that be sticking and the reason, that the pump did not stop?? Any other suggestions?
In my 1992 945 the pump stops immediately once I leave off the switch.
