towing, do the automatics hold up? 700 1989

I have a 760t with the AW series automatic. Question is how well do they hold up when towing. I know the cars are rated for 3500 pounds but i wouldn't do that to it. I like to take my 4 wheelers to the trails on the weekends and this spring, I thought about getting the brick a hitch. I doubt the weight would be anymore than 1500 pounds. Thats the trailer, 4 wheeler, gear, gas, etc... Do you think the tranny would take kindly to that with 218,000 miles on it? It was flushed and filled about 2 months ago and it has no mechanical problems and shifts flawlessly. Should I run it in 3rd gear (no overdrive) while I'm towing that much weight? Thanks for any imput.
