Southern Belle in the Tundra... 120-130 1967

Hello All:

1967 Volvo 122s Wagon. Again.

Okay, I have been burning the wires and perhaps a few bridges by posting so often on here but I have been making progress so once again; thanks to everyone for the help.

It is in the 20's here in New York (Merry Christmas, by the way) and I have not been able to get the car started since Friday. A quick run-down:

We had trouble starting the car in sub-freezing last week as well. This is a car that has lived in the south until I bought it in August, incidentally.

I replaced the battery last week and the car started perfectly. Of course, it was above freezing at that point.

On Friday it was 34 degrees Fahrenheit here. I decided to wash the car since it was pretty nasty from the last couple of weeks. I sprayed the underside of the car front and rear as well as inside the wheel wells. When I started the car immediately thereafter the car would not warm up to its usual operating temperature according to the thermometer on the dash. It also had an occasional backfire when I put the engine under load by shifting into gear and declutching (or is that clutching? Can someone clarify?)

Later that night I tried to fire her up again and she started okay but seemed to be running roughly. The backfire returned and I even put the cardboard over half of the radiator as everyone suggests but the temperature would not come up to its usual operating temperature.

Tonight I have not been able to get the car to start at all. It is cranking over just fine (battery and starter seem to be adequate). I even got a jump from a friend but was unable to get the engine to fire. It is turning but simply not catching. In my research before buying this car I heard they start in the cold with little difficulty so I am a bit surprised.

My wife seems to think I might have frozen something in the process of spraying underneath but my spraying was nothing compared to driving in the rain. Does anyone have any suggestions? Is it possible the car needs to be tuned for the winter?

Cheers,

Jeff Pucillo
