Tailpipe Under Axle Clearance? 200 1981

We did rear trailing arm bushings on one of the 81's this week. I noticed that with the car up on jack stands at the jacking points in front of the rear wheels, the rear axle was resting on the exhaust mid-pipe. It seems like you could crack or bend something in the exhaust system with all the leverage available back that far. Is it normal to have that kind of weight resting on the exhaust pipe every time the back wheels are off the ground? Is it reasonable to have enough space between the axle and the pipe so the differential can hang freely without putting any stress on the exhaust system, or would that cause the pipe to be too low under the car while driving? How much clearance do you have between axle and pipe with wheels on the ground?
