temp guage and stalling problems 200 1986

thanks in advance for any help with these (already posted somewhere, i'm sure) problems. i just got a new temp sensor and temp gauge installed. after driving for 15 minutes, max speed 50, the gauge shot up to just under the red. am wondering if i can get the gauge tested, or what might be wrong with it? could i possibly overheat in 15 min?

also, she stalls when slowing down and engaging the clutch into the 2nd gear for downshifting. sometimes, stalling only when making a complete stop. i can usually bump-start her back, if not, she'll start right back up with no interruption in driving. i've noticed a sound like a belt squeal before the dying happens. is this my fuel pump? i got my AMM cleaned and a ground connection fixed. as you can tell, i'm new to self-diagnosis, so any help is appreciated :)
