Exhaust questions 200 1988

My car needs a new cat (old, and not getting hot, thus probably not
working, alse very rusty) and new exhaust (poor Midas welding
keeps cracking). The car is a 1988 non-turbo. Can I get the
cat with pipe from FCP Groton and the turbo exhaust and use a
2" to 2.5" adapter from the auto parts shop to join the two? This
should work the same as a "sport" exhaust from IPD at about 2/3 of
the price if it works at all.
