Tranny problems?? 200 1986

Hi all,

I have found this board to be extremely helpful about a year ago when I had to replace all the engine wiring for my 86 volvo. Now I have been packing on the miles and seems that a problem that perhaps is getting worse could maybe be fixed, alleviated, avoided??

(automatic)
When I start the car (seems worse when cold) and put it into gear, sometimes like most of the time now, it will not 'get out of nuetral' I have to be careful to slowly tap the gas and stuff so that it will get into drive. Otherwise it allows the engine to rev and stay in nuetral before 'catching' and then it will be in drive but this seems like 'popping the clutch' and seems bad for my overall life expectancy. It does the same thing in reverse. Any ideas??

When do I check my tranny fluid, when cold, I could start the car and let it warm up for 15 minutes and then check?? Any products to put into it to help with this? Is it my oil being too thick??

THANKS FOR ANY INSIGHTS!!
