Hood release cable situation....must me a cable relaease virus 200 1986

Jaymes posted earlier about his hood release cable issue and here is mine.
I have an '86 240 sedan with 302K miles on it and for the last year or so, it seems to take more and more effort for me to pull on the white knob under the dash to release the hood latch. Short of removing it entirely and or relplacing it, is there any way of getting some lube spray down the entire length of the inner core to smooth it out or is there another fix. I'm afraid that one day when I really need to get under the hood it's going to snap.

Thanks everyone.....
