740GL shifter rattle 700

My 90 740 (192K) has a rattle in the gear shifter and after looking through the maint FAQ's, I know there are three rubber bushings within the linkage inside the center console that could cause a rattle if worn, but this noise is definitely coming from the knob at the top of the shifter and I can feel it especially when I am on rough ground or hit a bump, etc; what might cause this and how can I correct it?
