How to test alternator output with digital multimeter? (amps) 700 1991

Hello,

This is in an alternator that is known to be working.

I have been able to measure alternator voltage with the multimeter in parallel by connecting between the B+ terminal of the alternator and the engine ground.

I could not get any amps reading when attached the multimeter in series between the B+ terminal and it's wire running to the starter. Multimeter set on DC amps mode in the 0 to 200 amps range.

What am I missing?

Thanks.
