Hello:
My 1985 740 Turbo has been running tickety-boo as of late, but today I was hunting down some tail/park light bugs, as well as replaced my high beam headlights.
After I found all the problems (nothing a little Emory paper and WD-40 didn’t fix) I went to pick up a flat repair. On the way to the tire shop I had most of my electrical system on including fog and head lights. I noticed my amp/voltmeter (whichever it’s called) was not smack in the middle as usually, but rather, it was way over to the left, on what I would call ¼ a tank if the volt gauge were the fuel gauge. Not wanting to kill my battery I shut down all electrical systems, and the needle went back to the middle. As an experiment I watched the gauge needle when I pushed the switch for the driver’s window, as soon as I engaged the power window the needle plummeted to the left, revving the motor did nothing to move the needle to the right, but this is characteristic of alternators as opposed to generators as is my understanding.
Is this normal – am I losing charge from my alternator? I’ll run in and get it tested tomorrow just to be sure; it would not surprise me if it’s bad wires too. Occam’s razor…
Any ideas would be appreciated.
