How do you trust your brick for long distance trip

You trust the car by taking on progressively longer trips. Once I make a major repair/maintenace, I drive it around the block first, then check for leaks etc. Once it passes that test it runs errands. Then to work. Then around town. Once I feel comfortable with it, it gets passed on to my wife so I can do maintenance on the other one. As you get to know your brick(s), you'll have a good idea of the things that can go wrong and some idea of when they might.
