'fiberglass' looking strings coming out of the tailpipe! 700 1987

Hi List!

This is my first post so bear with me if I don't post in the right format :).

My husband has a 87 740Turbo station wagon, automatic, and the other day I saw something in the tail pipe. At first I was giggling to myself 'a banana in the tailpipe'.... until I got closer. I pulled out what looks like fiberglass strings.

I just found this site and finally went to bed at 3am after reading about all of the things that I can fix on his new baby. It idles rough, leaks oil, falls in and out of overdrive, is pink istead of red, etc.... My 'Honey Do' list is getting pretty long! :) LOL>

So if there is someone out there that can tell me what that stuff is and what needs to be looked at or replaced...I'll definately get that added to my list!

Many thanks in advance!

Anna

PS. THANK THE CAR GODS FOR THIS PLACE!!!! :) I HAVEN'T SEEN ANY OTHER SITE AS WELL DONE AND FULL OF LOVING CAR PEOPLE EXCEPT FOR US Z FANATICS! I AM REALLY GLAD TO BE HERE! :)
