SU starting with no choke 200 1981

I read a post last week indicating that if an SU (or any carbed) equipped vehicle starts with no choke pull, it is probably set rich, and could explain high fuel consumption. Most wisdom I have encountered says to leave the SU alone if the car runs well (it does), but I think 19mpg isn't great. The question is, can I turn the mixture screw with the beast running and get an indication "by ear" if I have made it run leaner?
