what's 'turbo plus' on a ' 89 760 turbo w/intercooler? 700 1989

Turbo+ was offered in 2 versions, the first was for the '84-'89 700 Turbo cars, and the later version utilized the improvements of the Jetronic 2.4 system for the '90+ vehicles. The early system can be installed in a later car, but not vice-versa.

Basically, a small seperate add-on computer monitors vacuum/boost pressure, ignition timing, engine RPMs, and the knock sensor. When you are at Wide-Open-Throttle and with the engine above a specific RPM, the Turbo+ unit allows the turbocharger to run a few PSI harder. The computer is a small black box that's bolted to the front of the Air Filter Box and it says NIRA AUTOMOTIVE on the top of it (visible from the top when looking at the air cleaner housing). Below the computer are the vacuum valves that regulate the additional latitude give to the wastegate actuator. It's all packed in there behind the right side headlight.

Turbo+ was an accessory kit available from the Volvo dealerships for the 740 Turbo and the 760 Turbo, and it was factory equipped on all of the 780 Turbos. The dealer cost was around $600 to $700, but many Volvo owners have chosen to retrofit a Saab APC boost controler to their vehicle for a much more cost effective solution that yeilds similar results (and they're more abundant in the salvage yards).

God bless,
Fitz Fitzgerald.
