144 fuel pump problem 140-160 1970

Hello,
Please excuse my lack of mechanical knowledge and use of incorrect terminology. My 144 lost power whilst travelling down the freeway recently. All seems fine but for the lack of fuel being supplied to the carby. Fuel comes through freely when the line is sucked from either side of the filter. The fuel pump is the type that bolts on to the side of the engine block with a shaft that protrudes into the block. I have removed the pump and pushed this shaft up and down by hand which causes fuel to be pumped out of the supply line (as expected!). The problem appears to be that it doesn't pump when mounted?? If anyone has any ideas as to what is happening here I would be very interested to hear. Thanks.
Kieran
