87 740 dies after start up 700

I changed the hall sensor, actually the whole distributor begining of last year and the car ran great! until ? While driving to work last week I hit a huge lake in the middle of the road and my baby ran a couple of seconds and just died.I tried restarting but it cranked and cranked. At 5:30am I was becoming a raving lunitic thinking I would have to walk. The car being a 4speed I figuerd because I was on a hill I would pop the clutch and away we go.....NOT. Nothing happened still wouldn't start.Long story short left it on the side of road.I came back with Mechanics from work pulled wires and sprayed everything down with silcone. I had lots of spark when we tried to start it.I let it sit for 5hrs. then another hr.later and then came the tow truck to bring her home.I started the car first shot next day, shut it off and went to dinner. Next day again started the car first shot again to do checks and it died 5 min. later tried to restart but it just cranked. From what I read I'm checking the fuel pumps tomorrow. I don't remember hearing the zinging noise of either pump when I turn the key.Is it possible or is just me getting older with my car or could the water have knocked the high pressure pump around.
Any ideas thanks, Dieter.
