wire caught in steering column 700 1991

If there's an award for stupid cell phone maneuvers, I think I just made it into the qualifying rounds. While parallel parking my '91 740 wagon last night, the wire connecting the ear piece of my telephone to the phone got draped over the steering column when I twisted to look behind me. This wire got caught in the space where there is a "seam" in the housing for the steering column and I am unable to get it out. There are 2 very small screws (that have the sort of head that requires an allen wrench) on the top of the housing just behind the steering wheel. If I remove these, will I be able to remove the covering and untangle the wire or will I be detonating an airbag???

Thanks in advance!
zephyr
