960 steering play 900

I'm working on updating my power steering cooler on my '93 960. For now, I'm going to just bypass the cooler system until I can locate a replacement. It looks easy enough to do, just unhook both of the rubber lines going to and from the cooler. I'll save these and get a piece of line to clamp in so that I can bypass the cooling loop.

While I was under the car, I felt some play in the steering shaft where it goes into the rack. Is this bad? The car's steering has always felt a little loose ever since I bought it. BTW, it has 75 K miles and appears to have been well taken care of.

Thanks,
Dave
