Electrical problem, speedo & temp go to zero, alt light comes on, 90 secs later all is well 700 1988

1988 740 Wagon, about 170K miles, only had this one about three months. It has begun having an intermittent electrical problem in the dash. I've not seen it myself, the wife reports that the alternator light comes on, the speedo drops to zero, and temp gauge drops to zero.

I did notice once that the temp gauge was sometimes not steady. The needle would quiver, and then it would stabilize. I checked the wires at the sender, insulation looked good (to my surprise) and wiggling and jiggling wire harnesses in engine compartment did not cause any gauge quiver. This was before the speedo and alt light got involved.

So, what do you think?
Ground problem?
